Had it not been for a passerby with a cell phone, the April 4 killing of Walter Scott in North Charleston might have been just one more infuriating story of a white police officer gunning down an unarmed black man and then saying he didn’t have a choice.
Protesters would have taken to the streets. Officer Michael Slager would have been placed on administrative leave while peers and talk radio rallied to his defense, saying, “Who knows what happened? We weren’t there.”
