Prof. Jay Bender receives lifetime achievement award

During the annual South Carolina Press Association (SCPA) meeting in Columbia this March, UofSC School of Law Professor Jay Bender received the organization’s first annual Lifetime Achievement Award. During both the luncheon and the dinner, Prof. Bender received a standing ovation.

Prof. Bender began his career in journalism in the 1960s as the ad manager for The Daily Gamecock at the University of South Carolina. Since then, he has represented the SCPA and many of its newspapers. He has been a professor at the School of Law and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications for many years. In addition to teaching, Prof. Bender is Of Counsel to Baker, Ravenel, & Bender, LLP. Bender is retiring from teaching at the end of the Spring 2016 semester, and will retire from practicing law at the end of 2016. However, he intends to remain a back up attorney for SCPA members.

After decades of advocacy and service, Kenneth Suggs (1975), Janet, Jenner, & Suggs, received the Southern Trial Lawyers Association (STLA) prestigious War Horse Award. This award was presented on February 5, 2016 and is the result of a long legal career dedicated to liability and workers’ rights issues.
